Alexander Zemlinsky is mainly known for his operas and orchestral songs with their opulent late Romantic orchestration. His earlier, inspired hit, the Trio for Clarinet op. 3, written in 1896, owes a great deal to his first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. And it was none other than Brahms himself who enthusiastically recommended the trio to his publisher Simrock, following the first performance in Vienna. As the autograph has disappeared, our edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous, partly blatant engraver's errors. Alongside the piano score, our edition comprises a part for clarinet in B flat/A, an authentic alternative part for violin as well as a cello part.

Son Trio avec clarinette op. 3, véritable coup de maître de jeunesse composé en 1896, s'inspire encore largement de son premier grand modèle, Johannes Brahms, tant sur le plan du langage que de l'instrumentation. Après la création viennoise, Brahms, emballé par l'oeuvre, alla jusqu'à recommander le trio à son éditeur Simrock, l'encourageant à le publier. Étant donné que l'autographe est perdu, notre édition repose sur le texte musical de la première édition. Nous l'avons examiné très attentivement et corrigé les nombreuses et parfois flagrantes fautes de gravure. Notre édition comporte en plus de la partition pour piano, une partie séparée de clarinette en Si bémol/La, la partie alternative originale de violon, ainsi que celle de violoncelle.

Da das Autograph verschollen ist, stützt sich unsere Edition auf den Notentext der Erstausgabe. Er wurde einer gründlichen Prüfung unterzogen und von zahlreichen, teils eklatanten Stichfehlern bereinigt. Die Ausgabe umfasst neben der Klavierpartitur je eine Stimme für Klarinette in B/A, die authentische Alternativstimme für Violine sowie die Cellostimme.
