Illustrations circulated among European courts, from the Medici to Emperor Rudolf II, fueling artistic and scientific curiosity. The book presents over 100 works of art from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and major international institutions, which highlight humanity's ongoing quest to understand its place in the world. In diesem reich illustrierten Buch wird der Verbindung zwischen Mensch, Natur und Zeit anhand der Darstellungen der Jahreszeiten und Monate von Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Pieter Bruegel dem Älteren und Jacopo Bassano nachgegangen. Im Laufe des 16. Jahrhunderts gewann die Erforschung der Natur im Zuge der wissenschaftlichen Revolution an Bedeutung. Die Kunst gewann für die Dokumentation der natürlichen Welt entscheidende Bedeutung, da sie für die wissenschaftliche Arbeit zugängliches Bildmaterial bot. Illustrationen zirkulierten an den europäischen Höfen, von den Medici bis zu Kaiser Rudolf II., und schürten die künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Neugier. In dem Band werden mehr als 100 Kunstwerke aus dem Kunsthistorischen Museum Wien und wichtigen internationalen Institutionen präsentiert, die das ständige Streben der Menschheit nach einem Verständnis ihres Platzes in der Welt beleuchten.
