Bartók's "Romanian Christmas Songs" are based on folk melodies that originated in a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, and which he felt gave "the impression of a fiery, war-like type of song, rather than a pious and religious one". Nevertheless, he chose 20 melodies from this collection of "colinde" and published them under the title of "Christmas Songs". In the first edition of 1918 they were conceived for children's hands and so were published "without octaves"; but in his revised edition of 1936, which we present here, Bartók added an appendix featuring alternative "concert versions", confirming that these miniatures are also perfectly suited for public performance. Our Urtext edition is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition, and for the first time integrates these concert variants directly into the musical text. We also offer the original melodies and translations of the texts of these colinde to provide an insight into the origins of this rather different kind of Christmas music. / Les «Chants de Noël roumains» de Bartók reposent sur des mélodies populaires associées à un rite païen de la célébration du solstice d'hiver et avaient fait sur Bartók «une impression plutôt de sauvagerie guerrière que de piété religieuse». Il choisit cependant parmi ces «Colinde» vingt mélodies pour les publier en tant que chants de Noël. Si dans la première édition, en 1918, ces dernières étaient encore conçues pour de petites mains d'enfant «sans empan d'octave», Bartók enrichit toutefois son édition révisée de 1936, que nous présentons ici, d'une annexe avec des «modifications pour l'exécution en concert» qui atteste que ces miniatures étaient désormais parfaitement abouties. L'édition Urtext qui repose sur l'intégrale des oeuvres de Bartók intègre pour la première fois ces variantes de concert directement dans la partition. Par ailleurs les mélodies et la traduction des «Colinde» donnent un aperçu des racines de cette musique de Noël un peu différente. / Bartóks "Rumänischen Weihnachtsliedern" liegen Volksweisen zugrunde, die als Teil eines heidnischen Winter-Sonnenwend-Brauchs auf Bartók "eher einen wild-kriegerischen als einen fromm-religiösen Eindruck" machten. Trotzdem wählte er aus diesen "Colinde" 20 Melodien, um sie als Weihnachtslieder zu veröffentlichen. Waren diese in der Erstausgabe 1918 noch "ohne Oktavspannung" für kleine Kinderhände konzipiert, so bereicherte Bartók seine revidierte Ausgabe 1936, die wir hier vorlegen, in einem Anhang mit "Änderungen für den Konzertvortrag", die die Bühnenreife dieser Miniaturen belegen. Die auf der Bartók-Gesamtausgabe basierende Urtextausgabe integriert diese Konzertvarianten erstmals direkt in den Notentext, zudem geben Melodien und Übersetzungen der "Colinde" Einblick in die Ursprünge dieser etwas anderen Weihnachtsmusik.
