The focus of Candice Breitz s artistic work lies on the examination of the influence of family, society or communities that form on the basis of certain affiliations such as race, gender, nationality or religion, as well as on the importance of the media which create new groups and associations. The Kunstmuseum Bonn is presenting a com­prehensive solo exhibition about the artist (*1972 in Johannesburg), who grew up in South Africa and lives in Berlin, with video instal­lations and photographs from the last 25 years. Feminist matters are the focus of this presentation, which shows works ranging from the early »Ghost ­Series« (1994), a series of photographs that reflected on the violence of whiteness under the apartheid regime at the moment of South Africa s political transformation in 1994, to more recent works such as »TLDR« (2017), a 13-channel video installation, which was created in collaboration with a group of South African sex workers and which deals with their worldwide struggle for basic human rights. For her most ­recent work »Labour«, which also was the ­inspiration for the exhibition title Breitz has filmed several women while giving birth. In addition to the exhibition documentation, the accompanying book offers an overview of all works since 2010.

Au centre du travail artistique de Candice Breitz figure la réflexion sur l influence qu exercent la famille, la société ou des communautés formées sur la base de certaines appartenances telles que race, sexe, nationalité ou religion et sur l importance des médias qui donnent naissance à de nouveaux groupes et alliances. Le Kunstmuseum de Bonn consacre une exposition solo complète à l artiste d origine sud-africaine qui vit à Berlin Candice Breitz (*1972 à Johannesburg) avec des installations vidéo et des photographies des 25 dernières années. Les problématiques féministes en sont au coeur. La présentation à Bonn va de travaux anciens comme Ghost Series (1994), une série de photos prises au moment de la transformation politique de l Afrique du Sud qui reflètent la violence persistante du régime sous l apartheid, à des oeuvres plus récentes comme TLDR (2017), une installation vidéo à 13 canaux réalisée en collaboration avec une communauté de travailleurs du sexe sud-africains. Quant à la dernière oeuvre qui donne son nom à l exposition, Labour (fr. : travail, main d oeuvre, contractions de l accouchement), Breitz l a réalisée en filmant des naissances. En plus de la documentation relative à l exposition, le catalogue qui l accompagne offre un aperçu de tous ses travaux depuis 2010.

Das Kunstmuseum Bonn widmet der aus Südafrika stammenden und in Berlin lebenden Künstlerin (*1972 in Johannesburg) eine umfassende Einzelausstellung mit ­Videoinstallationen und Fotografien der letzten 25 Jahre. Feministische Fragestellungen bilden bei dieser Präsentation den Schwerpunkt, wobei sich der Bogen von frühen Arbeiten wie »Ghost ­Series« (1994), einer Fotoserie, die die andauernde ­Gewalt des Apartheid-Regimes reflektiert, bis hin zu neueren Werken wie »TLDR« (2017), einer Videoinstallation, entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Gruppe südafrikanischer Sexar­beiter*innen, spannt. Für das aktuelle, titelgebende Werk »Labour« (dt.: Arbeit, Arbeitskraft, Geburtswehen) hat Candice Breitz Geburten filmisch ­begleitet. Neben einer Ausstellungsdokumentation bietet der begleitende Katalog einen Überblick über alle Werke seit 2010.
