The early Piano Sonata op. 4 offers interesting insights into the young Chopin's compositional development. In all probability written during his student years at the Warsaw Conservatory and highly prized by Chopin himself, the nineteen-year-old composer presented the work to the publisher Tobias Haslinger on a visit to Vienna.
But the publisher put off the still unknown composer. It was only when Chopin was at the height of his fame that Haslinger saw a possibility to do business - but this time it was Chopin who declined. Thus his first sonata was never published during his lifetime. To date an inside tip, this work is now available for the first time in Henle quality.

Il l'a probablement composée alors qu'il poursuit ses études au Conservatoire de Varsovie. Le compositeur, alors âgé de 19 ans, présente sa sonate hautement appréciée par lui-même aux fins de publication à l'éditeur Tobias Haslinger, à l'occasion d'un voyage à Vienne. Cependant celui-ci temporise, faisant prendre patience au jeune compositeur encore inconnu à l'époque. C'est seulement quand Chopin est arrivé au faîte de sa notoriété que Haslinger voit la possibilité d'une bonne affaire, mais cette fois c'est Chopin qui refuse. En conséquence, sa première sonate ne sera jamais éditée de son vivant. Restée jusqu'ici réservée aux seuls initiés, cette oeuvre est désormais accessible, pour la première fois, selon la qualité Henle.

Further information / Die frühe Klaviersonate op. 4 bietet interessante Einblicke in die kompositorische Entwicklung des jugendlichen Chopin. Vermutlich zu seiner Studienzeit am Warschauer Konservatorium entstanden und von ihm selbst sehr geschätzt, legte sie der 19-jährige Chopin anlässlich einer Wien-Reise dem Verleger Tobias Haslinger zur Veröffentlichung vor. Dieser vertröstete den damals noch unbekannten Komponisten jedoch. Erst als Chopin auf der Höhe seines Ruhmes stand, witterte Haslinger ein mögliches Geschäft - nun war es aber Chopin, der ablehnend reagierte. So wurde der Sonaten-Erstling zu seinen Lebzeiten nie gedruckt. Bis heute ein Geheimtipp, ist dieses Werk nun erstmals in Henle-Qualität erhältlich.
