In contrast to Mozart, Haydn was not a keyboard virtuoso. He certainly conducted his orchestral works from the harpsichord, and also performed his own piano sonatas, but any ambition to be a concertizing pianist was foreign to his nature. Thus "only" three piano concertos by Haydn have come down to us. The Concerto for piano and string orchestra Hob. XVIII:4 is full of spirit and the joy of playing. We know neither the occasion for which it was written, nor the year of its composition; the extensive preface to our edition of the playing score, with one string part each, discusses this in detail. As in the sources of the time, the solo part here also includes the bass line (with figures) for tutti sections. Axel Ruoff makes suggestions for the solo cadenzas required in movements 1 and 2; Haydn composed the cadenza for the concluding Rondo movement. This Urtext edition is based on the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is likewise published by G. Henle Publishers. The trade press applauds it: "In view of the scarcity of easier piano concertos, one can be thankful for this new edition, especially since it can be presented with a very small orchestra, perhaps even with a string quartet." / Contrairement à Mozart, Haydn n'était pas un virtuose du piano. Nous n'en connaissons ni la date de composition ni l'occasion pour laquelle il a été écrit. La préface détaillée de la présente édition du matériel comprenant une partition par partie instrumentale traite abondamment de ces questions. Comme dans les sources de l'époque, la partie de soliste comporte aussi les notes de la basse des parties en tutti (avec chiffrage). Les deux premiers mouvements incluent des cadences proposées par Axel Ruoff tandis que la cadence du rondo final a été composée par Haydn. Cette édition urtext se fonde sur la partition de l'édition complète des oeuvres de Haydn également parue aux éditions G. Henle, dont la presse spécialisée a fait les éloges: «En l'absence de concertos pour piano faciles, cette nouvelle publication a le mérite de pouvoir être donnée par un tout petit orchestre, voire un simple quatuor». / Im Unterschied zu Mozart war Haydn kein Klaviervirtuose. Zwar leitete er seine Orchesterwerke vom Cembalo aus und trug auch seine Klaviersonaten vor, doch der Ehrgeiz des konzertierenden Pianisten lag ihm fern. So sind uns von Haydn "nur" drei Klavierkonzerte erhalten. Das nur von Streichern begleitete Konzert für Klavier Hob. XVIII:4 sprüht vor Temperament und Spielfreude. Wir kennen weder den Entstehungsanlass noch das Kompositionsjahr dieses Konzerts. Das ausführliche Vorwort dieser Ausgabe der Spielpartitur mit je einer Streicherstimme beschäftigt sich damit ausführlich. Wie in den zeitgenössischen Quellen enthält der Solopart auch die Bassnoten (samt Bezifferung) der Tutti-Abschnitte. Für die in Satz 1 und 2 vorgesehenen Solokadenzen steuert Axel Ruoff Vorschläge bei. Im abschließenden Rondo hat Haydn die Kadenz auskomponiert. Diese Urtextausgabe basiert auf dem Notentext der gleichfalls im G. Henle Verlag erschienenen Haydn-Gesamtausgabe und die Fachpresse lobt: "Beim Mangel an leichteren Klavierkonzerten darf man für diese Neuerscheinung dankbar sein, zumal sie auch mit einem sehr kleinen Orchester, vielleicht sogar einem Streichquartett präsentiert werden kann."
