Zusammenfassung
William Kentridge, geboren 1955 in Johannesburg, zählt zu den be deutendsten zeitgenössischen Künstlern Südafrikas. Er arbeitet mit und zwischen den Medien Malerei, Schriftstellerei, Film, Performance und Musik sowie mit kollaborativen Formaten, um eine Kunst zu erschaffen, die sich auf Politik, Wissenschaft, Literatur und Geschichte bezieht und zugleich Raum für Widersprücheund Ungewissheit lässt. Kentridges Arbeit ist seit den 1990er Jahren weltweit in Museen, Galerien, Theatern und Opernhäusern ausgestellt worden und befindet sich darüber hinaus im Besitz vieler bedeutender Museen. Er hält die Ehrendokorwürde mehrerer Universitäten, darunter Yale und der University of London. Ausgezeichnet wurde er u.a. mit dem Kyoto Preis (2010),dem Prinzessin-von- Asturien-Preis (2017) und dem Praemium Imperiale (2019).
