For his only opera Leonore/Fidelio, Beethoven wrote four overtures in total. Chronologically, the so-called Leonore Overture no. 3 is the second of the series and perhaps the most performed of all Beethoven's overtures. During his own lifetime, it was heard not only in the theatre, but also in concert, thereby establishing with the Coriolan and Egmont overtures the new genre of the concert overture. Recognised around the middle of the nineteenth century as a masterpiece, it went on to become the "declared favourite of all orchestras," as Beethoven biographer Anton Schindler testifies. It now appears as a study score based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, with its own specially prepared foreword. / Pour son unique opéra Leonore/Fidelio, Beethoven écrivit en tout quatre ouvertures. Celle que l'on appelle «L'Ouverture de Leonore 3» est chronologiquement parlant la deuxième de la série, et certainement la plus jouée de toutes les ouvertures de Beethoven. Déjà de son vivant, elle n'était pas seulement donnée au théâtre, mais également en concert, et constitua ainsi, aux côtés des ouvertures de Coriolan et d'Egmont la forme nouvelle des Ouvertures de concert. Reconnue comme un chef-d'oeuvre vers le milieu du XIXe siècle, elle devint, à en croire le témoignage du biographe de Beethoven Anton Schindler, l'«oeuvre ouvertement préférée par tous les orchestres». Elle paraît à présent en tant qu'Édition de travail sur la base de la partition de l'Édition complète des oeuvres de Beethoven accompagnée d'une Préface autonome.
/ Für seine einzige Oper Leonore/Fidelio schrieb Beethoven insgesamt vier Ouvertüren. Die sogenannte Leonore-Ouvertüre Nr. 3 ist chronologisch die zweite der Serie und wohl die meistgespielte aller Ouvertüren Beethovens. Schon zu seinen Lebzeiten erklang sie nicht nur auf dem Theater, sondern auch im Konzert, und begründete so mit der Coriolan- und der Egmont-Ouvertüre die neue Gattung der Konzertouvertüre. Um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Meisterwerk anerkannt, avancierte sie nach dem Zeugnis von Beethovens Biograph Anton Schindler zum "erklärten Liebling aller Orchester". Sie erscheint nun als Studien-Edition auf der Basis des Notentexts der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe mit einem eigens erstellten Vorwort.
