C minor is traditionally the key of drama, passion, pathos, and pain, which also applies here in Mozart's famous C minor sonata K. 457. He wrote it in October 1784, though what might have triggered this incredible outpouring of a "romantic" world of feeling is unknown. Half a year later, Mozart composed his C minor fantasy K. 475, an extraordinary work in every regard. Both of these C minor works were published together in one edition in 1785, meaning that they were intentionally linked together by their author, counter to convention.
Until 1990 the autograph manuscripts of the Fantasy and Sonata in C minor were lost, and G. Henle Verlag were the first to undertake a thorough revision of the texts immediately following their re-emergence in Philadelphia, USA, at that time. In many instances, corrections had to be made to the musical text as previously known, because the most important sources up to that point - the first edition, as well as an authorized dedication copy of the sonata - proved to be imprecise and erroneous. Even an "Urtext" can occasionally be improved.

Il en va de même ici, dans cette sonate en Ut mineur de premier ordre K. 457 écrite en octobre 1784 sans que l'on sache ce qui pourrait bien avoir déclenché cette incroyable explosion de sensibilité «romantique». Six mois plus tard, Mozart composa sa Fantaisie en Ut mineur K. 475, extraordinaire à tous égards. Les deux oeuvres en Ut mineur furent ensuite publiées en 1785 dans une seule et même édition, c'est dire qu'elles ont été délibérément associées par le compositeur, hors toute convention. Les autographes de la Fantaisie et de la Sonate en Ut mineur étaient considérés comme perdus jusqu'en 1990. Tout juste après leur réapparition à Philadelphia (USA), la maison Henle fut la première à entreprendre une révision en profondeur du texte. En de multiples endroits le texte connu dut faire l'objet de révisions car jusqu'alors les sources les plus importantes - la première édition ainsi qu'une copie autorisée de la sonate pour dédicace s'avéraient ainsi imprécises et truffées d'erreurs. Comme quoi, même une édition «Urtext» est parfois susceptible d'améliorations.

Er schrieb sie im Oktober 1784, ohne dass wir wüssten, was diesen unglaublichen Ausbruch "romantischer" Gefühlswelt ausgelöst haben mag. Ein halbes Jahr später komponierte Mozart seine in jeder Beziehung außerordentliche c-moll-Fantasie KV 475. Beide c-moll-Werke erschienen dann 1785 zusammen in einer Ausgabe, das heißt: sie sind absichtsvoll, gegen die Konvention, von ihrem Autor verbunden worden.
Die Autographe von Fantasie und Sonate c-moll waren bis 1990 verschollen. Sofort nach ihrem Auftauchen in Philadelphia/USA war es der G. Henle Verlag, der erstmals eine gründliche Textrevision vornahm. An vielen Stellen musste korrigierend in den bis dato bekannten Notentext eingegriffen werden, denn die bislang wichtigsten Quellen, jener Erstdruck sowie eine autorisierte Widmungsabschrift der Sonate, erwiesen sich als ungenau und fehlerhaft. Selbst "Urtext" lässt sich manchmal verbessern.
