Über den Autor

Walt Whitman was an American poet, journalist, teacher, printer, and essayist born on Long Island, New York, in 1819. After working in newspapers and printing offices, he published the first edition of Leaves of Grass at his own expense in 1855. Whitman continued revising and enlarging the collection for the rest of his life, regarding each version as a new expression of his developing poetic vision.During the American Civil War, Whitman volunteered in military hospitals, tending wounded soldiers and writing letters for them. Those experiences inspired some of his most powerful poems about suffering, death, comradeship, and national grief. His radical free verse, frank treatment of the body, democratic vision, and expansive sense of self transformed American literature. Whitman died in Camden, New Jersey, in 1892, leaving Leaves of Grass as one of the foundational works of modern poetry.
