The Rainbow by D. H. Lawrence follows three generations of the Brangwen family, focusing on the sexual dynamics of, and relations between, the characters. Lawrence's frank treatment of sexual desire and the power plays within relationships as a natural and even spiritual force of life caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in an obscenity trial in late 1915, as a result of which all copies were seized and burnt. After this ban it was unavailable in Britain for 11 [...] in Love is a sequel to The Rainbow. Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen are two sisters living in the Midlands of England in the 1910s. Ursula is a teacher, Gudrun an artist. They meet two men who live nearby, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich. The four become friends. Ursula and Birkin become involved and Gudrun eventually begins a love affair with Gerald. All four are deeply concerned with questions of society, politics, and the relationship between men and women. Birkin asks Ursula to marry him, and she agrees. Gerald and Gudrun's relationship, however, becomes stormy.

Über den Autor
D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was one of the most significant and controversial writers of the early twentieth century. Born in Nottinghamshire to a coal miner and a schoolteacher, Lawrence drew deeply upon the tensions of industrial England in shaping his fiction. His work is marked by an intense exploration of human relationships, class divisions, emotional candour, and the psychological consequences of modern industrial life.Lawrence's major novels-including Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover-challenged conventional moral and social assumptions, often provoking censorship during his lifetime. Yet beyond controversy, his writing reflects a sustained concern with vitality, individual consciousness, and the search for authentic connection in a rapidly changing [...] addition to novels, Lawrence produced poetry, essays, literary criticism, and travel writing. His restless life took him across Europe, North America, Australia, and the Mediterranean, experiences that broadened both his thematic range and his philosophical outlook. Today, he is regarded as a central figure in modernist literature and a writer whose psychological insight and stylistic intensity continue to invite careful study.
