Sakuntala or The Fatal Ring: A Drama 1902 is a play written by Kalidasa, an ancient Indian poet and playwright. The two of them get married in secret, but when Dushyanta is called away on a military campaign, he gives Sakuntala a ring as a symbol of their love and promises to return for her. However, when Sakuntala arrives at the palace to join her husband, Dushyanta does not recognize her and denies ever having met her. Heartbroken and alone, Sakuntala is forced to leave the palace and return to her forest home. The play follows her journey as she deals with the consequences of her love for the king, and the fatal ring that ultimately brings about her tragic end.
