The Coptic Gospel of Thomas, rediscovered in Nag Hammadi in 1945, is among the most significant and at the same time most controversial apocryphal writings of early Christianity. For a long time, it was regarded as a loose collection of sayings and analyzed primarily from the perspective of form or tradition criticism. Stephanie Janz develops a new approach: she identifies a network of recurring keywords, formal parallels, and thematic references, and interprets the logia consistently in the horizon of the work as a whole. Using the example of the discipleship concept, it becomes clear that the Gospel of Thomas is to be read as an independent theological testimony. The author bases her work on the fully preserved Coptic manuscript from Nag Hammadi, which makes the text available in its entirety and thus allows for a coherent interpretation.
